Ed Key: Proteus

Proteus is an extremely beautiful game, which will be there to play for a while at Bit of Alright. It’s filled with naturalistic interactions and stripped down forms. I’ve played through several different builds of Proteus, and each time found them slightly more mesmerising, both through the procedurally generated terrain and the intentionally scripted events. Cause and effect aren’t always apparent, with the effect of making me feel a little superstitious about my actions within the game. Some action I assumed caused something can quickly becomes a habit, even if it was unrelated. It’s a beautiful, abstract, and supremely relaxing thing. Fuck realism, this is the closest I’ve come to the feeling of a walk in the countryside whilst sat at my computer.

Developer Ed Key will be there with it, and he’ll also be answering questions during Ricky Haggett’s session.

Prison Architect is Introversion‘s next anticipated title. Not only will it be playable at Bit of Alright, but Mark Morris, Chris Delay and sound artist Alistair Lindsay will all be on hand for you to talk to.

Live Game: WallFour

WallFour

WallFour is a new live events company formed by John Sear and Adam Russell. Their current project is a massively multiplayer local game, controlled entirely by laser pointers. I found this interesting for a few reasons, the main one of which is the relative anonymity of each player: You know the people you’re with, but it’s practically impossible to trace any one laser dot back to the person controlling it. I think, somewhat similarly to Transformice, this has an interesting disconnect between people’s identities and their visible intentions.

Until now, WallFour have concentrated on longer format shows and games, but at Bit of Alright, they’ll be presenting and discussing some shorter format work.
