DOOM, Kevin Patterson

Today we have mods, game design, art (and possibly Ert) to share with you, and this still isn’t everything we’re going to announce. Expect more early next week.

William Pugh and Dominik Johann will be making a game live on stage in just half an hour. William is designer of Birdball and co-creator of The Stanley Parable. Dominik is a prolific artist with a portfolio here, and he did the pixel art for one of our favourite local multiplayer games, LAZA KNITEZ!

Kevin Patterson is an artist. He’ll be here fresh from A Maze Berlin with The Kevin Patterson Experience, and will be leading a very special Art walk…

It’s been twenty-two years since the release of DOOM, but the modding scene for it is still going, and their work is incredible. Such as, this realtime weather engine for DOOM:

or this total conversion that adds more up to date rendering techniques from, well, everything that’s happened since DOOM:

The incredible Jazz Mickle, part of the team behind The Adventures of Square, will be coming to tell us about the amazing things people are doing with engines like GZDoom. She also made a game called Shoot Car, Shit Pants, and has a portfolio here.

Yet More People. They Just Won’t Stop

We have a load more people and things for you today, with subjects ranging from just a bit of fun to deep and momentous politics. Most is probably somewhere in-between those two particular poles.

Dick Hogg has run Tea Club for us the past few years, and this year has a talk he’d like to do from the stage. He’s excellent at that as well as illustration. You probably know his work most from Hohokum, but you can find his portfolio here.

Marie Foulston is Digital Design Curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum, as well as Queen Roughhouser at Wild Rumpus. She’ll be speaking, and has a breadth of experience in games, from running local multiplayer events and exhibitions, to looking well beyond the boundaries of what most people think of in connection with the term “games”.

Hebden Bridge locals Derek Hales and Rob Lycett have been designing and building the copy of Alice Becker-Ho and Guy Debord’s Game of War pictured above. It’s a deep and rewarding abstract strategy game first authored as part of the Situationist International movement. You can read more about it at Atlas Press, and come along to talk to Derek and Rob at the end of May.

Gareth Briggs, provided we’re not all transfixed in political horror by the end of May, will be talking about politics and games.

Alex Johansson is a game designer and lecturer who teaches accessible game development tools. He’ll be running a MakeyMakey workshop, which is a perfect introduction to making your own controllers before you have to deal with soldering, crimping and microcontrollers.

Dr. Kim Foale will be speaking about and running their game Art of Noises, an abstract musical performance game about the sociology of, communication and experimentation with sounds. It’s pictured below, but imagine a group of people around it with instruments, laughing.

At risk of your eyes popping from your head, we have yet more things and people to announce on Friday. There is something spectacular and hilarious coming to Hebden Bridge. Tickets are, as ever, at http://feralvector2015.eventbrite.co.uk

Today we have five incredibly multi-disciplinary people to introduce to you, who’ll all be doing things with you at Feral Vector. Follow the links below to see more about them and their work, or get tickets on eventbrite if you haven’t already.

Meg Jayanth is a writer and digital producer; one of the writing team behind the excellent 80 Days, as well as Samsara.

Tammy Nicholls is lead graphic designer for Tabletop wargaming giant Games Workshop, and she’ll be running MONSTERS vs VILLAGERS, about which she says: “You’ll be equipped with a deadly pair of scissors and some holy sellotape in your adventure. Remember: aim for the head and don’t split up.”

Harry Giles is a poet, performer and general doer, currently mid-residence on Orkney but he’ll be coming all the way down to Yorkshire to teach a workshop on gamepoems.

Niall Moody makes games, music, and occasionally (carefully, thoughtfully) mashes the two together, as with A Diary of Whispered Truths. He also makes really beautiful zines on diverse subjects. At Feral Vector he’ll be talking at Feral Vector about the history of encryption and secret codes.

George Buckenham is a game and thing developer from London, and co-organiser of Wild Rumpus. He’ll be running a workshop on creating your own Twitter bots.
