James Wallis: Spaaace

James Wallis

Pen and paper prototyping is a highly relevant skill to videogame design, practised by companies such as Denki. Rather than getting caught up in hardware or artwork, simple physical prototypes allow you to really focus on the rules of the system. Who better to talk to about it than a veteran RPG, board and card game designer? James Wallis is best known for the storytelling card-game Once Upon a Time, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. He’s worked with Sony, Hasbro, Channel 4, the BBC, Sky and Games Workshop, and used to lecture in game design at the University of Westminster.

Grethe Mitchell: Playground Games

Grethe is currently a reader in digital and new media at the University of Lincoln. Previously, she has worked on major AHRC projects, and co-edited the book Videogames & Art. One of the subjects Grethe has studied is playground games, on which she’ll be presenting, as well as maybe teaching a couple of them.

Alistair Aitcheson: Indie Exposure

Alistair-Greedy-Bankers

I’ve watched Alistair Aitcheson take Greedy Bankers from an outline idea in the pub to a fully realised, multiplayer iPad game. Along the way, he’s continually had to struggle for exposure and press, against the backdrop of a noisy app store where it’s easy to be drowned out. He’s also just 23 years old, and has done this pretty much straight out of University. As well as showing his game, Alistair will be talking about the process of taking an app from from unknown to well known.
